CBD Oil for Pets

In recent years, CBD oil has become the buzz remedy for issues such as anxiety, depression, inflammation, and more. Earth Shake, a Fells Point juice bar on the corner of Fleet Street and Wolfe Street even gives patrons the option of adding CBD oil into their smoothies–indica or sativa. The former generally provides a sense of deep body relaxation, while the latter tends to provide energy and an elevated mood (Zenity Wellness, n.d.).

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, oil is primarily extracted from the hemp plant. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is extracted from the marijuana plant (a cousin of the hemp plant), CBD has no psychoactive properties (Health Line, n.d.).

While there is no definitive scientific data on using CBD to treat canines or felines, there is anecdotal evidence from pet owners. The benefits of CBD on both cats and dogs include treating seizures and neuropathic pain, anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and possible anti-cancer benefits (American Kennel Club, n.d.).

Again, there is no scientific evidence, but based on the side effects of CBD usage in humans, potential side effects for use in pets are dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, and drowsiness. Pet owners should always consult their veterinarian before switching or adding new products to their pet’s diet or wellness plan.

There are a plethora of pet-specific CBD brands to choose from; some of our favorites are CBD Dog Health and Dope Dog Treats. Owners can choose from an array of topical products for ailments like torn ligaments, treats and food, and tinctures, which can be given to pets suffering from separation anxiety.

For any individual who is skeptical about giving or treating their pet with CBD, there may be reassurance in the fact that CBD is also widely available for human consumption. Owners can trial the plant oil first on oneself, and if satisfied, can then begin to administer to their pet accordingly. Happy Healing!
